Netscape Source Code Release Party
April 1st, 1998

On a 56k modem this page takes about 30 seconds to load.

My name is Andrew Naylor and at the time of this party I worked at Sun in Mountain View. It was a geeky party and the following pictures prove it. I went to the killer Mozilla.org party with Stefan to celebrate the release of Netscape's source code. I recorded video with my Sony Handycam and later captured the video into jpegs using my ATI All In Wonder card.
Netscape gave away free t-shirts to their employees much earlier in the day. Then the party staff brought the leftovers to the party and gave them out to the first 1000 or so visitors so that later in the night Netscape employees would ask you (with a somewhat shocked expression) if you worked at Netscape.
The party was so popular that after I left to get the video camera out of the car, I had to wait in line 45 minutes to get back in to the Sound Factory. While I was in line someone handed out a paper with all the swearing that was cut out of the code, and I made fun of Sun's Hot Java browser with the image formats programmer standing behind me.
Towards the end they gave away a bunch of stuff. Stefan ended up with an autographed CDR of the Code which said something funny on it.
Jamie says that if enough people e-mail him he'll do it again next year. The only question is whether or not they will even need to release more source code. I think an annual free code celebration is in order. They could call it the Burning Bill festival.
